Details Regarding Nursing Study Abroad

In the world of foreign study, there are all kinds of subjects which can be studied overseas. Nursing study abroad is popular because there are always plenty of nursing students who would love the opportunity to visit a foreign country while receiving college credit and an expanded education. Not only can you learn more about what it takes to be a nurse, you can interact with people from other cultures which naturally enriches your interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skills, or a good way with people, is imperative for a nurse to have.

Studying the health care technology and practices from another country can be very educational for those pursuing a nursing degree. One renowned university that has international study programs for nursing students is the University of Virginia. One is a summer study program in Denmark. Another is a semester program in New Zealand. There is also a South Africa program for those in the Distinguished Majors Program. Of course the programs offered by any one school may change from year to year. Be sure to check with the student advisor in charge of this department for full details.

For some students there are work study programs where you practice nursing under a supervisor with real patients. This not only lets you learn clinical, hands-on skills in a real world environment, it teaches you to bridge cultural and communication gaps. Even if you went to a country like England where English was spoken, there would still be differences because of regional dialects. You would be surprised how different some British speech sounds from American. Of course, in America you can hear different accents and colloquial speech simply by going from North to South or vice versa. It is the same way in England.

The point is, nursing study abroad has many advantages. Any hospital or doctor's office you were to apply with would see that you have been overseas to study nursing and this would count as a plus on your application or resume. It is not mandatory for nursing students to participate in foreign study. Therefore, the ones that do demonstrate a willingness to go above and beyond the minimum and stretch themselves academically. To find out more about study abroad programs for nurses offered by your school, speak to an advisor who handles placement of students in international study programs.
